THE GEELONG REGION
The greater Geelong region has so much to offer, with something for everyone, all
seasons of the year.
Geelong is the gateway to the Great Ocean Road with its magnificent beaches,
rainforests and townships (including Lorne, Airey's Inlet and Apollo Bay), offering one
of the great coastal driving experiences of the world.
Torquay, Ocean Grove, Anglesea, 13th Beach and Bells Beach are known for the
beaches. The region has some of the world's best surf beaches. Torquay has
world-famous surf culture industry and Bells Beach is home to the Rip Curl Classic
every Easter which attracts the world's best board riders.
To the city's east, the rolling hills and grasslands of the Bellarine Peninsula are home
to much of the regions farmlands and some of the best wineries and produce the state
of Victoria has to offer.
The Geelong region is home to a magnificent calendar of major events including the
Australian International Airshow which is held at Avalon, Geelong's domestic airport
every second March (even years). One of Australia's premier multi-cultural festivals,
the Pako Festa, is held in Pakington Street every February.
Geelong's rejuvenated waterfront is home to many of the city's events and festivals
including triathlons and New Year's celebrations. The bay becomes a sea of colour
during the Australia Day Weekend when thousands flock to the Audi Victoria Week
(one of Australia's biggest sailing events).
The Geelong region is rich in culture, with the Cultural District being home to the
Geelong Performing Arts Centre and Art Gallery with an impressive collection of art.
The National Wool Museum and Ford Discovery Centre have an array of interactive
displays, which show how these two industries helped shape Geelong into one of
Australia's most important centres.
If it's sport you want, well Geelong is much more than the AFL Cats. It has a wealth of
sport, including the Geelong Supercats Basketball, World Class Baseball facility,
swimming pools and the Barwon River - which is home to many of the state's rowing
competitions. And, let's not forget the surf carnivals during the summer months.
Geelong's central area is a cosmopolitan shoppers' paradise, whether you want high
fashion or bargains, the shopping district has everything. From the large shopping
centres with brand stores to the quaint boutiques, Geelong is the place to shop. The
city has been brought to life with new street scapes, artwork and plenty of places to
have a drink or bite to eat.
When the sun goes down, Geelong knows how to party. From the local pub to the
latest chic bar, or to gourmet dining, or thumping sounds of the nightclubs - Geelong
has it all.
